TANESIA M. WALTERS

Born in Jamaica and raised in New York and with the added flavor of calling the City of Mount Vernon home for the past 17 years, my cultural norms are as unique as it gets, which influences my ability to interact and unite people from all walks of life.

As your councilwoman my focus is to preserve what makes Mount Vernon a great place to live. This means valuing community engagement and services, small businesses and downtown, supporting public safety, police reform, and financial solvency. It means each decision we must ask does this add or take away from our quality of life. I bring to this role a unique blend of legal expertise, administrative insight, and practical experience that is unmatched.

In my most former role as the City Clerk for the city of Mount Vernon, I worked at the core of municipal operations. I know how cities function, from managing public records, to ensuring that meetings, agendas, and decisions comply with the law.

I hold a law degree which has equipped me with the tools to understand the legal complexities of governance, to write effective policies, and to advocate for solutions that withstand scrutiny. Additionally, my master’s public administration has given me a strategic understanding of public policy, budgeting, and the responsibilities of leadership. It’s one thing to know the law, but it's another to apply it for the greater good. My education and experience ensure I can do both. I understand the challenges of our community, but I also see incredible opportunities for growth, as your Councilwoman I will focus on the opportunities that will make us grow and thrive.
